I’ve come to realize something big lately—not just for myself, but for so many of the incredible people I coach: most of us aren’t failing because the plan doesn’t work. We’re failing because we struggle with follow-through.
And often, it’s because we fall into one of two traps: we aim for perfection... or we quit.
One of my clients said something recently that really stuck with me. She told me that starting my Nutrition Program felt like signing up for a running race. On Day 1, she imagined herself stepping up to the starting line—nervous, excited, filled with possibility. She could see her finish line: 10 pounds down, feeling energized and confident. And in that moment, everything felt possible.
Then the race began. The work started. And just like any marathon, there were good miles… and tough ones. Some weeks, she felt unstoppable—crushing her goals and hitting her stride. Other weeks, she wanted to throw in the towel. But every time she hit a rough patch, she brought herself back to Day 1. She remembered that starting-line energy, the vision of her finish line, and the belief that she could do it. That mindset carried her through.
She not only hit her goal—she surpassed it. And more importantly, she gained something that every person on a health journey needs: grit. She kept showing up. Even when the scale didn’t reflect her effort. Even when she had a weekend that veered off track. Even when perfection was nowhere in sight.
And that’s the difference-maker. Not perfection. Not luck. Just showing up—even on the messy days.
We have to stop throwing away the entire plan just because of one bad day or one “off” weekend. That kind of all-or-nothing mindset is what keeps us stuck. You don’t need perfect days to succeed—you need consistency, a comeback mentality, and a commitment to finish what you started.
So if you’ve ever felt like you “failed” a program or plan in the past, ask yourself this: was it the plan? Or was it the follow-through?
If your goal still matters (and I’d argue your health is always worth fighting for), then maybe it’s time to try again—with a new mindset.
✨ Start by coming back to your “Day 1” energy—that hopeful moment when you believed in yourself.
✨ Then, remind yourself daily that perfection isn’t the goal. Showing up despite the imperfections is what will carry you to your finish line.
